D comme Dada / D like Dada
For the author of the Cycle of Cheval-à-vélo, the initial letter of the word “dada” can be written either with a block letter or not. This option, changing “d” into “D” and vice versa, entails a series of puns and jokes because of the several meanings implied by the French word “dada”. Indeed, it is then up to the spectator to decide whether the picture he is looking at only refers to a hobby-horse (i.e. a “dada”, in childish language, thus connecting this hobby to the Mailman’s surname “Cheval”) and, in colloquial language, to a grown-up’s hobby, or, also, to the artistic trend of Dadaism and to Duchamp’s identification to a horseman (more properly, to the knight as a pawn riding on a chessboard.
